Have you ever opened a commercial or PDF sewing pattern and wondered, “What am I supposed to do with all of this?” After unfolding all the tissue paper pieces, have you found yourself asking how these instructions turn into the beautiful outfit shown on the cover?

In this class, we’ll dispense with the mystery and help you understand exactly how sewing patterns work from start to finish. You’ll learn how to read pattern instructions, choose the right fabric, determine your correct pattern size, and properly prepare your pattern for sewing. We’ll even cover a simple, effective way to store both commercial and PDF patterns once they’re out of the envelope.

This is a Beginner Pattern Class and is strongly suggest for all students before sewing a garment.

Please bring a commercial or PDF pattern you are considering sewing next. If time allows, we’ll end with an open Open Q&A session to address individual questions.

Students Will Learn:

  • How to read and understand a commercial sewing pattern

  • How to identify recommended fabrics and yardage

  • How to properly take body measurements (wearing fitted clothing)

  • How to determine pattern size based on measurements

  • The importance of transfering pattern markings to fabric

  • Best practices for storing commercial and PDF patterns
